Wedding, August 9th, 2003

Nancy and I chose to get married on the Colorado National Monument, a beautiful red sandstone plateau just outside our home town of Grand Junction, Colorado. It was one of our favorite places as we were growing up, and we have many fond memories of hiking in canyons, looking out over cliffs, and watching lizards sun themselves on the rocks. We originally wanted to have our ceremony way out on a point, but the park rangers said that it was too dangerous for more than 15 people at a time. We settled on a flat rock area near the cliff dropping of into Wedding Canyon (appropriately). Honoring Nancy's Quaker background, we had a Quaker-style ceremony, which is why you won't see an officiator.

Posing after the ceremony
This is actually after the ceremony, but I figured I might as well start with one of my favorite pictures.

Location
Here we are, scoping out the wedding site. We set up chairs on the dirt, and Nancy and I sat on chairs on the rock cliff edge.

Addressing Audience

Sarah
Sarah played Trumpet Voluntary and an exceprt of a Beethoven Sonata. That's my car battery being used to power the keyboard and amp. Fortunately, there was enough charge left to start the car when the ceremony was over. :-)

Our Friends
Our friends who came to support us. Botum, Nadia, Nancy, Me, Alison, Ri, Lisa, Nick, Josh, Lois, Kathy, and Ryan.

Leaving after the ceremongy
This is probably my favorite shot. I'm carrying the table from the licence signing, and we're leaving after the last load of chairs have been put in the car.

View up the canyon
This is the view from the wedding site up Wedding Canyon to Monument Canyon.

View down the canyon
This is the view from the wedding site down Wedding Canyon out into the Grand Valley, where we grew up.

Pool party
After the ceremony, we adjourned to my mom's house where we had a pool party. I got out of my dress clothes and into my swimsuit as fast as possible, but Nancy enjoyed parading around in her dress for quite a bit longer. :-)

Cake
This is the cake baked by Sarah's good friend Andrea. It's three layers of cheesecake: Hazelnut, fudge swirl, and plain. It was amazingly good.

Taboo
After things calmed down and the local guests went home, we played some games with our college friends (who were staying with us).

Bloopers

Some of the pictures didn't turn out so well . . .

First blooper
"Why did I go through with it?!" Acutally, neither of us remember Nancy making this face, and we don't know why she was. We also don't know why I look so smug.

Second blooper
"Look over there!"
